About Kathy

Kathy is a seasoned intellectual property attorney with over 16 years of experience. With a keen eye for detail and a strategic mindset, Kathy has directed attorney teams in both offensive and defensive patent analyses, including product mapping, invalidity claim charting, product clearance, pre-acquisition due diligence, directed prosecution based on a target product or licensing agreement, and full-scale non-infringement and invalidity opinions of counsel.

Specializing in software and medical device innovations, she ensures that her clients’ intellectual property is robustly protected and tactically leveraged. Over her legal career, Kathy has evaluated thousands of technology patents, drafted scores of opinions of counsel, and guided multiple Fortune 50 clients in patent portfolio strategy and management. For example, Kathy has performed clearance investigations for worldwide feature releases, has assessed patent claim charts for multimillion-dollar licensing negotiations, and has managed patent due-diligence for successful client acquisitions.

Kathy’s computer science and software related experience includes, for example, network protocol technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), virtual/augmented/mixed reality display environments, database structure and management, garbage collection and memory allocation management, block-chain technologies, cryptography, productivity suite application features and functionality, and graphical user interface features and functionality. Her medical-device experience includes acute-care ventilators, patient monitoring, remote healthcare, orthopedic fixation devices, spinal implants, ultrasound localization technologies, ultrasound liposuction devices and tools, surgical instruments and access devices, and surgical cutting devices and tools.

As a prior science teacher, Kathy is passionate about inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals. Believing that patent law is a phenomenal technical career, she designed and directed a legal internship program aimed at encouraging high-school girls from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in IP law. Outside of her legal career, Kathy enjoys supporting her mountain community and owns two small businesses in the Colorado foothills.
